Abstract: Ten new species of the genus Philonthus Stephens, 1829 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) are described as follows: Philonthus agapornis sp. nov. (Democratic Republic of Congo), Philonthus asio sp. nov. (Republic of South Africa), Philonthus cuculus sp. nov. (Sierra Leone), Philonthus hypargos sp. nov. (Republic of South Africa), Philonthus lepiobagrus sp. nov. (Tanzania), Philonthus litocranius sp. nov. (Republic of Central Africa), Philonthus pytilia sp. nov. (Tanzania), Philonthus quelea sp. nov. (Zimbabwe), Philonthus trochocerus sp. nov. (Republic of Chad), Philonthus zoothera sp. nov. (Democratic Republic of Congo). One species is synonymized: Philonthus aonyx Hromádka, 2009 syn. nov. of P. lebkanus Fauvel, 1907; one species of Philonthus is transferred to the genus Afrorabigus Levasseur, 1965 and synonymized: Afrorabigus mortuorum (Cameron, 1951), comb. nov. and syn. nov. of A. robusticornis (Bernhauer, 1915). The male genitalia of all species and morphological details of some species are illustrated.

Additional records and identification keys for species of both groups from Madagascar are presented. Distribution of Philonthus rufus and Philonthus bicoloripennis groups in Madagascar are summarised and mapped.

Tomáš Kadlec, Michal Zapletal & Pavel MarhoulMotýli vybraných evropsky významných lokalit Libereckého kraje (Česká republika)Klapalekiana 49(1–2): 43-71Abstract: During four years of research (2009-2012) at six Sites of Community Importance in Liberec Region (Czech Republic) 437 species were recorded from target lepidopteran groups. The most important findings are the hygrophilous moths Phragmatiphila nexa (Hübner, 1808) and Arenostola phragmitidis (Hübner, 1803). The record of P. nexa is the first from the region of North Bohemia. Eleven of the species are included in the Red list of threatened species of the Czech Republic, namely: near threatened - Aporia crataegi (Linnaeus, 1758), Phengaris nausithous (Bergsträsser, 1779); vulnerable - Phengaris teleius (Bergsträsser, 1779), Argynnis adippe (Denis et Schiffermüller, 1775), Drepana curvatula (Borkhausen, 1790), Entephria infidaria (La Harpe, 1853), Orthonama vittata (Borkhausen, 1794), P. nexa; endangered - Rhyparia purpurata (Linnaeus, 1758), Coscinia cribraria (Linnaeus, 1758), Protolampra sobrina (Duponchel, 1843). In the study region, the typical species of wetlands and mesophilous habitats (Phengaris species, Orthonama vittata (Borkhausen, 1794), P. nexa (Hübner, 1808), A. phragmitidis (Hübner, 1803)) and xeric sandbanks (e.g. Coscinia cribraria (Linnaeus, 1758), Agrotis vestigialis (Hufnagel, 1766) were observed, often with high numbers of individuals. Other species, especially Heteropterus morpheus (Pallas, 1771), are interesting from a faunistic point of view. They have very limited occurrence in Bohemia, often centred mostly on the research area.

In total, 1601 specimens of pseudoscorpions were collected in this area. This material, together with the previously published data, comprises 23 species from 7 families. New localities for the rare species Allochernes peregrinus Lohmander, 1939, Apocheiridium ferum (Simon, 1879), Chernes cimicoides (Fabricius, 1793), Chernes similis Beier, 1932, Larca lata (Hansen, 1884) and Mesochelifer ressli (Linné, 1758) were found during this study. The number of pseudoscorpion species in the Lower Morava Biosphere Reserve is the highest known for any locality in the Czech Republic, and reflects the unique position of this region for biodiversity.

A single worker was found on a temporary log pile close to mixed oak forest at Štiavnické vrchy Mts, central Slovakia. Aspects of distribution and ecology of C. tergestinus are discussed.

During the last two decades, an increasing number of records from across the country indicate its northward expansion and colonisation of higher altitudes. The expansion of O. palustralis is consistent with other recently documented cases of expansion of southern species in Central Europe, which can be attributed to habitat change and a warming climate. However, it is one of few such cases for the comparatively little studied microlepidopteran families.
