Abstract: Brachysomus bohemicus sp. n., belonging to the Brachysomus subnudus (Seidlitz, 1868) species-group, is described from the Bohemian Karst and its close surroundings (Czech Republic). The new species is distinguished from the most closely related species Brachysomus subnudus.

Our results, based on literature, lead us to the preliminary conclusion that in the Czech Republic, this species could be considered as a relict of continuous forests. Populations of this species have steeply declined with loss of primary habitats. We present recent and historical distributional data for this species from the Czech Republic and adjacent countries. To our knowledge, the only recent Czech records of C. haematodes are from Mionší (Czech Silesia). However, the species occurred historically in southern Bohemia (four records, one confirmed from Kamýk u Protivína), northern Moravia (Kotouč u Štramberka) and Czech Silesia (Karlova Studánka and Praděd). We also discuss localities on the Polish side of the national border, and the occurrence and red-list status of the species in the central Europe. Thus, we analyse its presence, distribution and risk of extinction in the Czech Republic and central Europe.

Hana Šípková & Jan RůžičkaPreference různě staré mršiny u nekrofágních mrchožroutovitých brouků (Coleoptera: Silphidae) ve střední EvropěKlapalekiana 45(3–4): 213-219Abstract: We observed the carrion succession stage preference of necrophagous carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) in Žabovřesky nad Ohří (Libochovice env.) in northern Bohemia. We used pitfall traps with mouse carrion of different ages (three days old and fresh) to test the hypothesis that burying beetles (Nicrophorus Fabricius, 1775) prefer carcasses in an early stage of decay, in contrast to the other necrophagous carrion beetles (represented by two species of the genus Thanatophilus Leach, 1815) which are attracted to older carcasses. We found no sex- or species related difference in carrion preference in either Nicrophorus or Thanatophilus species. Moreover, all species showed a significantly higher preference for the three days old carcasses than for the fresh ones. These results contradict previously published findings stating that the burying beetles (genus Nicrophorus) are mostly attracted to fresh carrion, whereas the other necrophagous carrion beetles are generally attracted to older carcasses. We discuss the possible explanations for this phenomenon and indicate the direction of our future research.

We report here the rediscovery of this butterfly in the foothills of Vsetínské Vrchy Mts., Czech (Western) Carpathians: Halenkov vill. part Lušová (6674b) in 2009. The area is well-covered by butterfly recording, so it seems that the species has either existed in extremely small populations there, or, alternatively, has recently re-colonized the area from nearby Slovakia.
